Learning in Nursery

Learning in Nursery promotes children’s inquisitive nature and provides opportunities for children to enquire, take risks, experiment and investigate their world. Children are immersed in a play-based curriculum and stimulating environments that foster creativity, enthusiasm, motivation for learning and fun. Children in Nursery learn through active experiences in continuous provision, adult led activities and short carpet sessions.

Our Curriculum

Our Nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage framework, at St George’s School we use this as the basis for our learning. In addition to this we enhance our curriculum to represent our local area, community and children’s interests and needs. Children are at the heart of the curriculum and exciting topics are developed to motivate children to engage, explore and learn. Some examples of topics the children have learnt through are; Space, Spring has Sprung, Once Upon a Time, Superheroes, Our Wonderful World, Space and Let’s Celebrate! The children love learning through immersive environments, and topics.

Learning Outside

Children have lots of fun learning outside of their classroom in Nursery. Children have opportunities to develop their gross motor skills, teamwork and confidence in their outside area. They are encouraged to use the Characteristics of Effective Learning; playing and exploring, active learning and creating and thinking critically. Children enjoy exploring their ideas, problem solving and using their equiry skills as they learn in their outside area.

Children in Nursery have access to continuous provision and play-based activities inside and outside of the classroom in free flow access through the day. Daily story sessions spark a love of reading for our youngest learners from the start of their learning journey with us. Children have short carpet led sessions to support their listening and attention skills, develop their passion for learning and spark interests and hooks for their learning. Daily phonics sessions will support children’s early phonological awareness to prepare them for future learning.
