Learning in Year 1 2022-2023

Welcome to Year 1

Welcome to Year 1. This term we have some exciting learning around the themes of 'Fire! Fire!' and 'Dangerous Dragons and Dingy Casteles'.

We will be looking at the Great Fire of London in Spring 1 which will include the diaries of Samuel Pepys, recipes and poetry.

Our theme topics this year will be:

Autumn 1: Park Life!

Autumn 2: Blast Off!

Spring 1: Fire! Fire!

Spring 2: Dangerous Dragons and Dingy Castles

Reading and Phonics

We follow Little Wandle Letters and Sounds and children will take part in a 30 minute phonics session per day. In the Summer term all Year 1 children will take part in a Phonics Screening Check. This is a national check to see if children are sounding and blending at words at the age related level. Please ensure your child’s reading folder is in school every day as they will read their books daily. Please use your child’s readingcard to show that you are reading with them at home. We ask that you read 5 times a week and tick their card to show you have done so. Your child’s books will be changed once during the week.

Please support your child at home by reading 5 times a week and practising basic maths skills such as counting backwards, forwrads  and across 100, adding and subtracting numbers to 20 and learning number bonds to 20. If you need any advice or support please speak to your class teacher.

Supporting your child at home

Please listen to these songs, which are about counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.

Phonics support at home - Little Wandle

The resources on this website link page will help you support your child with saying their sounds and writing their letters. There are also some useful videos so you can see how they are taught at school and feel confident about supporting their reading at home.
