History

Subject Leaders: Mrs D Martin, Mrs B Parekh, Mrs E Thompson

History at our school is a vibrant and engaging subject that brings the past to life. Our intent is to inspire curiosity about the people, places, and events that have shaped our world. We aim for every child to develop a deep understanding of historical concepts, chronology, and the impact of human choices across time. By exploring diverse stories and perspectives, pupils learn to think critically, make connections, and appreciate how history influences the present and future.

Real-World Connections

Studying history helps pupils understand the world they live in today. Through exploring social change, cultural development, and political events, they see how the past informs current issues and identities. History also supports literacy, geography, and citizenship education by developing critical thinking, communication, and research skills. We encourage pupils to see themselves as part of an ongoing story—active participants in shaping the future.

Curriculum

Our history curriculum follows the National Curriculum for England and is thoughtfully sequenced to ensure progression of knowledge and skills. Beginning with topics close to home and familiar experiences, pupils gradually expand their understanding to explore ancient civilisations, key British historical periods, and significant global events. Each unit builds on previous learning, allowing children to develop secure chronological understanding and a strong sense of historical enquiry.

Learning Experience

History lessons are immersive and enquiry-driven. Pupils investigate the past through artefacts, photographs, historical sources, and storytelling. They take on the roles of historians—asking questions, analysing evidence, and drawing conclusions. Lessons are differentiated to meet all learners’ needs, ensuring that every pupil is challenged and supported. Beyond the classroom, history is enriched through drama workshops, themed days, and visits to historical sites and museums, helping to make learning memorable and meaningful.

Showcasing our success

We are proud of our pupils’ enthusiasm and achievements in history. Highlights include engaging history clubs, living history days, history competitions, and excellent participation in educational trips to castles, museums, and heritage sites — all of which provide powerful opportunities to deepen understanding and spark curiosity. We regularly display photographs and pupils’ work in school and on our website to celebrate their learning. Our pupils leave primary school with a strong foundation in historical knowledge and the confidence to question, investigate, and appreciate the richness of the past.
